Face Fit Testing
Compliance, Confidence, and Worker Protection
Ensure Your Respiratory Protective Equipment Fits Correctly
Face Fit Testing is an essential part of any respiratory protection programme. It confirms that a tight-fitting mask or respirator forms an effective seal against the wearer’s face, providing the level of protection intended by the manufacturer.
Even the highest quality respiratory protective equipment (RPE) cannot provide adequate protection if it does not fit correctly. A poor seal can allow hazardous dust, fumes, vapours, fibres, or airborne contaminants to enter the mask and be inhaled by the wearer.
At Trade Safety, we provide professional Face Fit Testing services to help employers meet their legal obligations and ensure workers are properly protected.
Why Is Face Fit Testing Important?
A Proper Fit Is Essential for Maximum Protection
Face Fit Testing helps to:
- Verify that a mask provides an effective seal.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements.
- Protect workers from hazardous airborne substances.
- Reduce the risk of exposure to dust, fumes, vapours and contaminants.
- Provide documented evidence of testing and compliance.
Face Fit Testing is not only used to determine whether a mask fits correctly but also helps ensure users understand how to correctly fit, adjust and wear their respiratory protective equipment. Even the best respirator will provide little protection if it is not worn correctly.
Face Fit Testing should be completed before a mask is used in the workplace and repeated whenever there is a change in the wearer’s facial characteristics or the type of mask being used.
Quantitative Face Fit Testing
The equipment required to support safe entry and emergency rescue operations.
At Trade Safety, we carry out Quantitative Face Fit Testing using specialist equipment designed to accurately measure the effectiveness of the seal between the wearer and their respirator.
The testing process compares the concentration of particles in the surrounding air with the concentration of particles inside the mask to calculate a Fit Factor. This provides an objective and highly accurate measurement of mask performance.
Quantitative Face Fit Testing is suitable for a wide range of tight-fitting respirators, including disposable masks, half masks and full-face respirators.
Who Requires Face Fit Testing?
Protecting Workers Across a Wide Range of Industries
Face Fit Testing is recommended for workers using tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment in industries such as:
- Construction
- Manufacturing
- Pharmaceutical
- Engineering
- Utilities
- Waste Management
- Agriculture
- Healthcare
- Asbestos Removal
- Confined Space Operations
Before Your Face Fit Test
Simple Steps to Ensure Accurate Test Results
To ensure accurate results, please follow these requirements before attending your appointment:
Please Ensure You:
- Are clean shaven where the mask seals against the face
- Do not smoke, vape, eat, chew gum or drink anything other than water for at least 30 minutes before the test
- Bring the mask or respirator you will be using
- Bring any filters or accessories used with the mask
- Wear any prescription glasses normally worn while using the mask
For best results, we recommend avoiding food, chewing gum and drinks other than water for at least 15 minutes before testing and avoiding smoking for at least 60 minutes beforehand.
If you normally wear safety glasses, goggles or a hard hat while using your respirator, you may be asked to wear them during the test to ensure the results accurately reflect your normal working conditions.
Please note that facial hair between the face and the mask seal can prevent an adequate fit and may result in a failed test.
What Happens During the Test?
Simple Exercises to Verify an Effective Face Seal
The Face Fit Test typically takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
During the test, the wearer will carry out a series of simple exercises designed to simulate normal workplace movements. These exercises help identify any leakage around the mask seal.
The test includes activities such as:
- Normal breathing
- Deep breathing
- Turning the head side to side
- Moving the head up and down
- Talking
- Bending or moving
- Normal breathing again
The testing equipment continuously measures the seal of the mask throughout each exercise, providing an accurate indication of how well the respirator performs during typical workplace movements.
Upon successful completion, certification can be provided for your records.
